1. What is Suboxone?

Suboxone is an FDA-approved medication used to opioid use disorder (OUD). It reduces cravings and opioid withdrawal symptoms and helps people to focus on long-term abstinence and recovery.

2. How Long Does It Take for Suboxone to Start Working?

Suboxone will start working within minutes. Most feel the desired effects of a dose within 20 to 45 minutes, meaning they'll experience a reduction in cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Since the buprenorphine in Suboxone is a long- acting drug, you'll feel the effects of the dose for about 24 hours.

3. Can I become addicted to Suboxone?

Yes. Suboxone is a powerful medication that can lead to dependency and tolerance if it is abused. If taken as prescribed, Suboxone is safe and effective. Comprised of two primary ingredients (buprenorphine and naloxone), Suboxone is able to stimulate the same receptors in the brain that other opioids do all without creating the same uncoordinated high. As a result, buprenorphine is able to help you stay focused on your daily goals and accomplish them.

4. How do l know if Suboxone is right for me?

Suboxone is known as a safe and effective medication that can help individuals who are grappling with an opioid addiction. If you have become dependent on one or more opioids, incorporating Suboxone into a comprehensive plan at a medication assisted treatment program can help put your abuse to an end without struggling with cravings or painful withdrawal symptoms. The best way to determine if Suboxone is the right medication for you is to speak to your physician who can evaluate your needs and recommend the appropriate treatment for you.

5. How should I store and transport my medication?

Suboxone and other buprenorphine products are Type Ill controlled substances. Therefore, you should secure them in a discreet, preferably locked location in your home. If you need to travel with your medication, you should take as few tablets or films as necessary, along with the box or bottle with your prescription on it if you encounter the police.

6. Do you treat people with an alcohol use disorder?

Yes. We often treat an alcohol use disorder as a secondary issue to an opioid use disorder, but we can also treat it as a primary issue. Our patients struggling with alcohol use disorder have a range of medications that have proven to be effective, including Vivitrol, naltrexone, topiramate, antabuse and Campral.

7. Do I need to be in withdrawal before my first dose of Suboxone?

Patients should be in mild withdrawal before taking Suboxone or another buprenorphine medication to avoid the more significant effects of precipitated withdrawal.

8. How long will l need to be on Suboxone?

The periods of time that you will need to be on Suboxone will be a decision that you and your doctor will make. Extensive research has proven that Suboxone is safe to use both long, and short-term. Some people take Suboxone for long periods of time, while others only take it for a little while before tapering off. Suboxone is beneficial in the sense that it stops drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms so that individuals can maintain mental clarity so they can continue working, going to school, engaging in therapy, and so on. Suboxone's effectiveness does not lessen over time, which means that you can keep using it as long as you need.
